Ambulatory EEG monitoring can help diagnose your seizure type or symptoms and provides important information. The purpose is to be able to see exactly what is happening when you have a seizure or event and compare the picture to what the EEG records at the same time. Sounds that occur during the testing are also recorded - this can pick up if a person talks or makes any other sounds during an event. By doing this, doctors reading the EEG can tell if the seizure or event was related to the actual electrical activity in the brain.
Typically, 20-90 minutes worth of data is gathered from Routine EEGs. Long-term EEGs gather 2-120 hours of data which means that we have all the more potential to capture an actual seizure/event as well as any abnormalities. In addition, a large percentage of abnormalities occur while sleeping, so capturing a patient's sleep pattern can be beneficial.
